The boats that we have on rental are known as Amesbury Dories.  The Dory is produced by the Stur-dee Boat Company over in Rhode Island.  They have been producing these Dories since the late 1940’s.  This boat was selected to be our rental boat for several reasons.  Regionally based manufacturer, Family run Business, the length of time in business, but the chief reason was its design.  This boat is very stable.

 

The Dory has high freeboard.  This makes the Dory both a dry boat and it will take some rough water.  The Dory will seat four adults with gear with space still for comfortable fishing or cruising.

 

Now the dory because of the high freeboard you wouldn’t think that you could take a swim or go diving out of this boat.  Even the ever possible falling over board.  These dories are design to be able to pull the rail part way to the water line without fear of rolling the boat over.  So getting back into the boat is very doable.

 

Apart of the stability is the type of construction and design.  In brief, the construction is of hand laid fiberglass with a special core bottom that makes it rigid and strong.  Fiberglass tanks with foam flotation run the entire length on both sides of the boat thereby making the Dory unsinkable.  Therefore, this makes the dory very molded and rigid.  The seats are for sitting, not apart of the structure.

The Rental boats are 15’ 11” long.  The Dories are equipped with  4 stroke 15 horse power Mercury outboard engines.  Each rental boat has steering consoles with electric start.  There are no cords to pull or tillers to play with for the enjoyment of  our patrons and their guests.  The standard gas tank is 6.6 gallon and we will rent an extra tank  if requested.

 

Each Dory is equipped with the proscribed safety and use gear.  Such as life jackets, fire extinguisher, noise device, paddle, and a bailing device.  These Rentals are not intended for night time use and there are no running lights.  All rentals must be back by 5:30pm..

 

All children 12 and under must wear a lifejacket while the boat is in operation as per the Ct Boater’s Guide.  BOTTS  has a limited supply of children lifejackets on hand first come first serve.

If fishing north of the 95 Highway Bridge in the Thames River, a fishing license is required by the DEP.

DORY MUST BE BACK AT THE DOCK BY 5:30PM.
