Boating on the Thames, LLC. Offers access to the most storied resource the Thames River and Long Island Sound for both the Resident and the visitor whether this be in the form of a rental, launching/hauling, repairing an engine, or storing a boat. At Boating on the Thames, LLC. We welcome the Recreational boater, the Commercial operator, and the paddlers.
Boating on the Thames, LLC. May be a new company but it is the latest evolution of family businesses that spans three generations and over eight decades of use on Harrison's landing. Whether Depression, Hurricanes, War, or the times we have always worked on this property. Where one generation it was Oysters, another generation marine construction, and this generation it is access.
We, Malloy’s, have been around so long that we are apart of the waterscape since the 1920’s we have been operating commercial marine businesses in the New London area since. My grandfather’s Oyster shop was located behind the RR station on the River side until the 38th Hurricane relocated it (where we do not have a clue). He Oystered all over Long Island Sound from beds up in the Thames River, Gardner’s Bay, and New Haven to name a few. Beside the Oystering there was the freighting of potatoes and other items up to Norwich, Hartford, and Providence. There was of course the freighting of stone for Mr. Gillette and the sightseeing tours for Dr. Miner of the Natural History Museum.
Captain Malloy like so many on a September afternoon in 1938 watched his business ruined in the wind and water of the 38th Hurricane. The bulk of his oyster boats ruined and the oyster grounds all tore up. But Pappy as he was known cleaned up the wreckage from the hurricane. He continued to oyster and used the property for what ever he could well into his 80’s. Pappy rented small boats, freighted, rented out warfage, and junked vessels. Watched his sons Larry Jr., Frank, and William go to war and fortunately all returned.
William the 2nd generation built a marine construction business on this same property starting in the late forties all the way until 2006. How many of us have stood on the Chubb Wharf at Mystic Seaport and not realize that a local contractor from New London built it. Or ran around the band stand that my Grandfather brought over with an oyster boat. How many times has the dredge Carnesse been seen going in or out of the Thames River or even motoring around Long Island Sound that it is so common to the eye that it is no longer noticed. We are apart of the fabric of the area.
The 3rd generation is reinventing the use of Harrison’s Landing. Boating on the Thames is offering access. Not every person and family lives directly on the water or has a dock in their back yard. Many simply do not have the money to keep a boat in a marina. A lot of people have a small boat sitting and rarely used. And there are others who look towards the River or the Sound thinking it would be nice to have a boat to take the kids fishing. Or see a kayaker and would like to try that. Maybe there is a canoe in the garage wouldn’t it be nice to have a place that is safe and convenient to take a paddle.
The family decided that when William ended his career, we must continue to use this property as a family marine business because it is tradition. William passed away in late February 2009. We, Gregory Schroder (son in law and mechanic) and Janet Malloy (daughter) are continuing the traditional family use of this property. Greg is a mechanic this is his trade. He has been a service manager for several years at a major local marina. Janet had a long professional career in the marine construction management. Where Greg has a keen understanding of engines, Janet has a keen knowledge of both business practices and regulatory issues such as how important it is being a custodian of the environment.
Boating on the Thames has the facility for access to the River and Long Island Sound beyond. There is nothing to equal a cruise up the River on a sunny day seeing the waterfowl around Manacoke Island, the various coves that dot both side of the River, and the Sun’s stunning profile. Or a group of friends fishing down by Junk island.
Stop down 13 miles of River to explore, no waiting. |
